Is Change Possible?

For my birthday, my son and daughter-in-law bought me a 50” TV to replace the one that had broken in my bedroom. I was so excited to see such a wide screen!

My husband, however, immediately said, “That TV is too big. It won’t fit in our bedroom.”

I suggested we put it in the game room. Once again, resistance. “It’s still too big. It will take up too much space.”

Now, it wasn’t that my husband didn’t appreciate the gift. He simply struggles with change. He prefers things to remain the same.

After a week of debating who was right and who was wrong about the TV placement — or whether we should return it — I decided to put a plan in place.

Without telling him, I ordered a TV stand that would accommodate the new TV. When it arrived, I left the box sitting in the living room where it could not be ignored. I didn’t argue. I didn’t pressure. I didn’t ask him to assemble it. I simply remained silent and allowed time to do its work.

By the end of the week, my husband said, “How about me and our grandson assemble the TV stand and put it in the game room?”

I smiled and replied, “That’s a great idea.”

Once it was assembled and the TV positioned just right, you would have thought it had been there for years. And guess who has now claimed the gameroom as his “now” favorite place to be!

Here’s what I learned:
Sometimes resistance to change isn’t about the situation — it’s about control.

●Control can bring a sense of comfort.
●Control can feel safe because it’s familiar.
●Control can even be rooted in past experiences.

What my husband needed wasn’t pressure. He needed time to process the change. By giving him space, I allowed him to make the decision without feeling like his control had been taken away.

And that is exactly what we teach in ALIVE Community.

We equip women with Biblical tools to:
• Understand that change is possible.
• Embrace change as a pathway to joy, peace, and fulfillment.
• Release unhealthy control and trust God more deeply.

Change doesn’t have to threaten us. With God, change can transform us.

P.S. Sometimes the change we’re resisting today may be the blessing we will enjoy tomorrow.
